Andrée Bonthuys

My life-long concerns have been with fragility, both in nature and the human condition.

Material as medium: I have recently come back to working with clay, after a 20year break. I also work with found organic materials such as bone, bleached coral, plant and stone. Where appropriate, I add organic remains to my ceramic pieces, merging my two loves. I often use symbolism or mythology, and consciously create with as low a carbon footprint as possible.

Biography: I was born and raised in Pretoria and graduated BA Languages, University of Stellenbosch, 1973.

Started working with clay in 1978.

Teachers who have inspired and guided me on my art journey were Prof Eben Meiring, my French Prof at Stellenbosch, who inadvertently ignited the fire of visual expression, Carl Jeppe, my first sculpture teacher in 1974, Sharon Mitrie, my first pottery teacher, Maureen Langley at the Ruth Prowse Art School, who guided my clay sculpting, David May, who taught me raku firing,

Nina Romm, who released my creativity, and Emma Willemse who honed my conceptual expression.

In 2019 I joined the Overstrand Artist Collective (OAC), which has been an interesting and supportive development, leading to 3 very successful exhibitions within 4 months.

I have works in collections throughout South Africa, in the UK, Europe, the USA, Hong Kong and Australia
