Lee Hensberg’s journey to becoming an award-winning ceramicist started when she realized that in order to stand out as an artist, she needed to change medium.
As a mother of two, Hensberg became an occasional student at NMU and found herself inspired by clay, “You never stop learning, it constantly humbles you”.
She went on to be one of the founding members of the Ceramics South Africa -Eastern Cape branch and sells her functional ware under the label “Freakalee Ceramics”. She has received numerous awards from CSA-EC Regionals, celebrities like Neil Diamond have purchased her work and she has exhibited in galleries ranging from the Nelson Mandela Art Museum to Hermanus Fyn Arts.
Hensberg is inspired by a passion for her African heritage and her love for the intensity of the laborious, unpredictable craft of clay-making. Her focus in on hand-making and hand-painting each item into a collectable work of art.
