Mary Visser

Mary Visser’s studio practice is centered around experimentation and the invention of placeless spaces.

“I collect numerous images of fashion, interiors and art along with compositional studies, colour experiments and scraps of studio detritus. These images and non-images that end up scattered on the studio floor trigger chance happenings in my paintings. I deliberately make a mess and then try and fix it or make it right. "

Born in 1971, Mary Visser graduated in 1992 with a BFA from Rhodes University, Grahamstown. She has had six solo exhibitions, the two most recent being ‘Funny Things are Everywhere’ at the AVA Gallery and ‘Assembly’at Circa Gallery, Cape Town in 2018. She has participated in various group exhibitions including ‘Summer Show’ at the Everard Read Gallery, Cape Town and ‘Out of Nowhere’ at Smith Gallery in 2017.

Her work is in collections locally and abroad including those of the University of Cape Town, Nando’s, Spier and the New Constitutional Court, Johannesburg.
