Kate Schärf was born in 1993 in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal. She graduated with a BA Visual Arts degree from Stellenbosch University in 2018. She is currently completing her Masters at the same university and has been part of a number of group exhibitions.
Passionate about drawing, she produces works on paper using charcoal, watercolour and printmaking techniques. Her subject matter deals primarily with plant life, depicting its various structures, complexities and interconnection, arranged in a harmonious way. Through layering and erasure, she attempts to convey a sense of depth and tangibility, whilst also questioning fantasy and reality. She finds joy in producing such pieces, as she reflects and documents changes brought about by the seasons.
